(Amber Fares, Palestine/U. S./Qatar/ Denmark/UK/Canada). 80 minutes. Rating: NNN Five Palestinian women pursue their passion for car racing – and smash stereotypes at the same time – in this high- energy pic.
The races are spectacular and the women engaging. But Amber Fares doesn’t know quite what to do with the complicated politics of the Israeli occupation that are the pic’s backdrop. One sequence at a checkpoint and another at the practice track near the wall would have made the point.
As it is, the characters don’t quite come into focus. But the superbly shot races and blistering soundtrack make this a good bet. Apr 29, 6:15 pm, TIFF 1; Apr 30, 7:15 pm, Hart House; May 2, 4 pm, Isabel Bader
