THANK YOU DEL: THE STORY OF THE DEL CLOSE MARATHON

NOW Magazine - Hot Docs - - Hot Docs Film Fest Guide -

( Todd Bieber, U. S.). 84 minutes. Rating: NNNN Every June, the founders of the Upright Citizens Brigade hold a weekend event in New York City in honour of Del Close, the Chicago comedy guru who died in 1999 but remains a legend among improv performers for his theories on the “yes, and” approach to long-form sketch comedy.

A biography of Close alternates with footage from the 2015 edition, following UCB founders Amy Poehler, Matt Besser,

Matt Walsh and Ian Roberts as they orchestrate three days of nonstop performance at the UBC theatre in Chelsea. Both streams are compelling in a messy, engaging way, but if you’re a fan of the altcomedy scene – or of Besser’s podcast, improv4humans – this is an absolute feast of lightning-fast funny.
