NOW Magazine - TIFF - - FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW -

After recent awards-worthy work in films as diverse as Magic Mike, Mud and Killer Joe, one question remains about Matthew McConaughey. Will he finally get his Oscar nomination? This could be the film that does it. He plays the real-life Ron Woodruff, a womanizing, boozing heterosexual man who contracts HIV, is told he has a month to live and becomes an AIDS activist, smuggling unapproved treatments across the border from Mexico to help himself and others (including Jared Leto as a drag queen). With Quebec’s Jean-Marc Vallée (C.R. A. Z.Y., Café De Flore) at the helm, expect mesmerizing period imagery, solid performances and a sensitive portrayal of the marginalized. September 7, 10 pm, Princess of Wales; September 8, 11 am, Visa Screening Room (Elgin)
