Tom McCarthy’s humanist dramas – The Station Agent, The Visitor and Win Win – put
most other American independent ilms to shame
with textured emotional landscapes and terri ic cast
ing. None of that explains The Cobbler, one of my TIFF 2014 top picks that ended up being a colossal mis ire. But I’m willing to believe in McCarthy again as he drama
tizes the Boston Globe’s investigation into the Catholic Church’s cover-up of molestation by Massachusetts priests. Having Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ru falo, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery,
Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup on board suggests a much-needed return to form.
