Jean-Marc Val­lée seems in­ca­pable of mak­ing an un­in­ter­est­ing movie, even turn­ing po­ten­tial Os­car-bait projects like Dal­las Buy­ers Club and Wild into com­plex, emo­tion­ally grip­ping works of art (and also gen­uine Os­car con­tenders). This year’s TIFF opener – star­ring Jake Gyl­len­haal as a wi­d­ower who starts tak­ing his world apart – sounds like a chal­lenge he couldn’t re­sist.
