Toronto’s energy efficiency office advises you to ask your gas supplier or power company about rebates to replace your manual mercury-containing thermostat with a programmable one. www.toronto.ca/energy/index.htm Mercury-containing thermometers and thermostats should be taken for disposal to a household hazardous waste depot. Check www.toronto.ca/garbage/depots.htm for a location near you. They’re open Wednesdays from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 7 am to 12:30 pm. You can also bring them to the city’s Environment Day events, which offer household hazardous waste collection. See www.toronto.ca/environment_days for all the details.
