headed to the open­ing of Anser’s new show, Sur­face Sal­vaged, at # Hash­tag Gallery on Fe­bru­ary 11. Twenty min­utes af­ter open­ing, it’s al­ready packed. Art buy­ers min­gle with artists, crit­ics and a mass of ex­cited young fans. It’s a lit­tle over­whelm­ing.

An in­stal­la­tion of bricks bear­ing the artist’s sig­na­ture graf­fiti face, Mys­te­ri­ous Date, hangs in the win­dow. The graf­fiti bomb is one that Anser has painted on walls around the globe, from Shang­hai to Mon­treal, New York and Ber­lin. It’s one of a num­ber of pieces in­cor­po­rat­ing ma­te­ri­als re­cov­ered from de­mo­li­tion sites and aban­doned fac­to­ries across the GTA.

I catch up with Anser by tele­phone a few days later, the pseudony­mous artist call­ing from an undis­closed lo­ca­tion. Here are some high­lights from our con­ver­sa­tion.
