Hellebores for zone 5 to 6
Early spring in and around Toronto and further south is made extra special with the arrival of the hellebores or the Lenten rose. Not everyone in Ontario is so lucky. This lovely shade plant is tender. Most of the hybrids won’t survive in locations lower than zone 6.
The rose-like flowers shyly face downward, but lift them up and the view is stunning. The petals come in muted shades of red to almost black with some pinks, whites, greens and picotees. Some have speckled petals and others have contrasting black centres. Some are edged in wine. They are all a treat to winter weary eyes.
