Beavers swim up
On March 19, the Orleans Scout Group held a Swim Up event on the lawn of the Science and Technology Museum. A Swim Up event happens annually in Scouts when a Beaver Scout ages out and moves up to Cub Scouts and a ceremony is held.
The kids are divided into two groups, beavers (ages 5-7) and cubs (ages 8-10). Some scouts also attend and can be as old as 18. The ceremony is a culmination of the time the kids spent as beavers in which they’re welcomed into the ranks of the cubs. It’s a way for them to say goodbye to their times as a beaver because they’re finally mature enough to proceed onward. The Orleans Scout Group reports a growth of 20 to 25 per cent in the last year and a half due to the engaging programs they offer, such as camping trips, viewing the planets through telescopes, and leadership opportunities for the children.
