Ottawa Business Journal - HR Update - - Retention -

Ways to increase perceived flexibility:

Provide employees with a greater sense of control over their hours of work and their work schedule; Give employees paid time off to attend relevant training sessions, course and conferences; Employers need to give employees the opportunity to take a fixed number of paid days off work per year (Ms. Duxbury and Mr. Higgins suggest five) to care for sick children or elderly dependents; Organizations need to introduce new performance measures that focus on objectives, results and output. In other words, move away from a focus on hours to a focus on output.

Ways for managers to become more supportive:

Make work expectations clear; Listen to employees; Plan the work that needs to be done; Give employees recognition when they do their job well; Make yourself available to answer employee questions; Ask for an employee’s input before making decisions that affect their work.
