THE GOODS: If you’re af­ter the mod look of de­sign mag­a­zine pho­to­graphs, here’s where you’ll find the goods in Ottawa. The clas­sics are all here: Saari­nen ta­bles in round and oval, Barcelona chairs; Eames and Le Cor­bus­ier loungers; but also many new de­signs in­clud­ing funky clocks and pen­dant lights; and even some lo­cal de­sign­ers from Car­leton Uni­ver­sity’s de­sign pro­gram. OWN­ERS: Mihran and Ka­tia Zaroukian quit their jobs in the sci­ence in­dus­try “be­cause we wanted to get away from the cor­po­rate world and in­dulge our love of mod­ern de­sign.” Mikaza started out as an In­ter­net-based busi­ness for two and a half years be­fore they took the leap of open­ing the Bank Street store. Re­ac­tion has been so pos­i­tive, they say, that they will soon be open­ing a large show­room in Gatineau, where they’ll stock take-home items and have thou­sands more to touch and feel.
