Food and Wine Bar

Kitchen Gods, John Taylor has a firm footing. For over a dozen years, he’s been wowing diners at domus café in the ByWard Market. Now, Old Ottawa South, where chef John and his sommelier wife Sylvia have lived for years, is home to a second John Taylor food experience.

Taylor’s Genuine Food and Wine Bar is like a greatest hits album, with all the best flavours of Canada represented. Taylor’s Genuine boasts a short menu of quality food and a comprehensive, but not overwhelming, wine list that is regularly updated, showcasing local and international boutique wineries as well as some obscure varietals.

As with the wines, the lunch, dinner and weekend brunch menus are revamped often, depending upon the best offerings of the season. From sustainable fish to great steaks and game meats to vegetarian options, the choices are fresh and creative. The Genuine Burger, topped with smoked Balderson cheddar and pancetta, elevates this diner staple to a new high while the pan-seared tuna is perfectly prepared and prettily presented with seasonal vegetables.

“Our charcuterie boards are extremely popular,” notes Sylvia. “You can choose from in-house terrines and pâtés, sliced Ontario cured meats, local cheeses and smoked fish, to design a platter for yourself or to share.” Also not to be missed are the house-made desserts – and if the Genuine Brownie served with Pascale’s ice cream is on offer, it’s your lucky day!

The newly-renovated space is intimate, uncluttered and welcoming. Warm woods and funky fabrics are accented by rich plum-coloured walls, anchored by a tavern-patterned floor made with pine reclaimed from the Ottawa River. The open kitchen offers an added delight for diners who like to watch the action, and the turntable behind the bar spins great tunes each night.

Although John and Sylvia intended Taylor’s Genuine to be a neighbourhood spot, it’s drawing praise and patrons from all across the region. “I guess our good reputation in the Market has really helped,” explains John. With a great vibe and an honest, hardworking kitchen you’re sure to leave Taylor’s Genuine feeling satisfied.

Taylor’s Genuine Food & Wine Bar is at 1091 Bank Street (at Sunnyside). Call 613.730.5672 or email taylorsgenuine@storm.ca.
