SINGING THE summertime BLUES
I love Ottawa! But, living in the second coldest capital in the world is a challenge for someone who loathes cold weather. Yet, on the plus side, it sure makes me appreciate summer even more.
So, with this issue we tried to showcase all the wonderful aspects of the season. Firstly, the focus is on the cottage and cottage-inspired living. The relaxed lifestyle, synonymous with warm summer weather, encourages the desire to decorate with comfort in mind – without sacrificing style of course! Secondly, we look at casual entertaining with ease. It can be a breeze; especially if you combine warm air, friendly conversation, good music and buffet-style dining.
Knowing that music and summertime go together, we explored some nearby communities and were excited to find such inspirational talent. Our profile series showcases four locals to watch for as their popularity is rapidly increasing. Much of the growth of the capital’s music scene is thanks to Bluesfest and its founder, Mark Monahan. After my interview with Mark, I wanted to high-five the guy who has a really cool job and is only too happy to share his passion with us. He brings some of the biggest names in the industry to a summer festival that is said to have attracted half of Ottawa.
You can keep the music playing all summer long by visiting the venues featured in our Eating Out section. Paula Roy highlights places noted for impressive live music and delicious food.
Music plays a big role in my life during the summer. It starts the minute I wake up at the cottage when I turn the music on and let it play all day and night. Nothing’s better for me than sipping drinks at a patio bar and listening to live music on a hot summer night. I confess, I’ve even been known over the years, to hop up on stage to sing with the band. So what if I’m a terrible singer – I just cannot help myself! Perhaps it’s the warmth of the air, the sound of the music, the magic of the drink, or maybe I was just born this way – but when a band is playing my song, I need to sing with them. Whatever the reason, summer is my time to celebrate.
May our latest issue encourage you to crank the music and get this season started!
