Winter Magic

Ottawa Business Journal - Ottawa at Home - - EDITOR’S NOTE -

Every once in a while we need to stop and let a little magic into our lives. So when the

Ottawa At Home team came together to plan the first issue of 2012 we agreed the time was right to embrace the magical side of winter in Ottawa.

In Designer At Home, you’ll discover a contractor who magically transformed a dated bungalow to maximize space, both inside and out, for his own family of four. Next, we take you up to the Gatineau region to meet a woman who finally found the perfect home to house her magnificent collections. This woman’s energetic spirit is captured beautifully within Jane Whiting’s words and Mark Holleron’s photography.

Heading further into Quebec, we visit a stylish couple who share their talents and dreams with anyone who wants to be a part of their creative endeavours. To enjoy a glimpse of an Ottawa magician’s whimsical home, step inside with Vera Cody. He also shares some of his stories, but not any secrets, because that would ruin the magic!

Contrary to popular belief, spirituality is not magic. It’s a scientific element that combines with love, energy and the power of faith to create mystery and intrigue for those who open their minds to the possibilities . . . To get a better understanding of this mysterious profession, our profile series taps into the hearts and minds of four local spiritual guides.

This issue could not focus on winter in the capital region without our hometown pride represented – and who better than Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray to do this. Araina Bond got to hang out with the “hometown boy” long enough to feel the inspiration of a passion-driven life.

Winter in the capital can be a magical experience if you catch the perfect day. When the temperature is just right, go for a skate on the canal and then a stroll through Little Italy to feed both the belly and the soul – just as Paula Roy did while researching her Eating Out feature!

It’s no secret that winter is my least favourite season. The cold, damp weather wreaks havoc on most aspects of my life, but there is no denying the spirit-lifting feeling you get when the perfect winter day presents itself and you race outside to play. In my case, a certain photographer just happened to be there to capture the magical moment . . .

Yes, it’s been a while since I last built a snowman. But check out my editor’s photo – and you’ll see that I still know how!

Go ahead, make your own magic happen. Mary Taggart, Editor in Chief mtag
