Crafting beautiful, liveable spaces

Ottawa Business Journal - Ottawa at Home - - ADVERTORIAL -

Design and construction have been lifelong passions for Jason Labelle. The owner of Dalton Distinctive Renovations (DDR) fondly remembers his first project at three years of age, working with his grandfather to build a sandbox for his newborn brother. Since that time, he’s rarely been without a hammer in his hand or an idea for transforming living spaces in his head.

His background as a licensed cabinet maker contributes to Jason’s attention to detail. “We always strive to be sure whatever changes we are making to a home mesh well with the existing structure,” he explains. “Recently, we took a beautiful but dated Rothwell Heights home and transformed it into a modern day gem ideal for a young family. It now boasts beautiful, functional interior spaces that anchor the home in its gorgeous, treed lot.”

Now, with fifteen years and scores of projects under their collective toolbelts, the DDR team is considered one of the finest full-service renovation providers in the area. Masterfully completed jobs all across the region include gorgeous homes in Rothwell Heights, the Glebe, Rockcliffe, Old Ottawa South, Westboro, Kanata Lakes and other neighbourhoods.

What sets DDR apart, says Jason, are the depth and skills of the 20+ person DDR team. “We do all our carpentry work in-house, rather than subcontracting it out. This not only enhances our quality control; it also improves our scheduling since it’s our own people doing the work. On top of this, clients benefit from the fact that our team members are fully invested in the outcome of the project – they are not simply hammers for hire.”

DDR employs a lead carpenter system whereby a senior craftsman is appointed to head up each project and is on the job site every day. “Clients really appreciate having that consistent point of contact as it ensures questions get answered promptly,” Jason explains.

In addition to skilled craftspeople, DDR also boasts an excellent in-house designer with extensive experience preparing plans for renovations to kitchens, bathrooms, rec rooms and more. If the scope involves structural elements, DDR teams with architects as necessary to ensure the clients’ dreams are translated into workable plans. “In addition, we have a very strong partnership with a thirdparty technologist to expedite the design drawings and permit process,” adds Jason.

“Even when we do bring in the best outside partners as needed for highly customized elements of a project, we always manage every phase ourselves, including delivery, installation, service calls, and more. A big part of our excellent reputation is that our projects are always undertaken in a full turnkey fashion – from dustproofing and floor protection before the job starts, right through to the final paintbrush stroke. Our service excellence is just one of the reasons we win awards for our work.”

Anyone who’s ever undertaken a renovation knows that surprises will inevitably crop up during the course of the project; it’s how the renovation team handles the unexpected that can shape the whole experience for the client. “On top of weekly status meetings, we have a thorough process in place to handle issues that arise,” says Jason. “We calmly let the client know what’s going on and then we create, in writing, a detailed change order for the client to review; it outlines how we feel the situation should

be addressed. It takes a lot of the anxiety out of dealing with the unexpected and it is a key element of our end-to-end project management.”

One of the most fulfilling aspects about being in the renovation business is that DDR gets to help people create the space of their dreams. “We truly love that transformational process and watching as clients see their home being refashioned into what they’ve always wanted. We often have the ability to suggest things the client has not conceived of. Our projects frequently involve additions but we have also had great success working within an existing footprint to maximize living space. It’s all about respecting the client’s budget while creating the home they want.”

There is no shortage of happy clients ready to sing the firm’s praises. “DDR and their designer developed our concept into a stunning reality,” says Sheila Gervais. “From day one, as the homeowner, I was completely integrated into their team. I think this is one of the key strengths of DDR. I was more than impressed and satisfied with their ingenuity, solution-finding and attention to detail. Our home is warm, inviting, modern and clean - fit for another lifetime thanks to DDR. I highly recommend DDR for efficient, professional, well-executed design and renovation work.”

It is evident that everyone on the DDR team takes tremendous pride in their work. “Our carpenters are artisans who love the fact that they get to work on such unique and interesting projects and share in the clients’ joy when it’s all done,” confirms Jason. “Our success is built on each of us at DDR understanding our clients’ vision and expectations, then communicating with them throughout the process until their dreams have been realized.”
