Carpe Diem, Ottawa!
T he activities surrounding the inaugural Ottawa Entrepreneur Week held in mid-november last year illustrated a number of truths about Ottawa’s business community. There is an active entrepreneurial community in Ottawa and its composition is as diverse as the industries that it supports. At the launch reception for the event, I met with a variety of entrepreneurs – young, old, repeat offenders and others who were taking the plunge for the first time – and what they shared in common was a vision of success and a willingness to take the risks required to bring that vision to fruition.
What was also important to note, as the week unfolded, was the number of organizations offering services and support to entrepreneurs. As we move forward, we must ensure that the community comes together to provide services and support in synchronicity. Ottawa has a deep talent base, and for those who have chosen to follow the entrepreneur route, it is important that the community work to provide the key things that they need: money; mentorship; and space.
