High-tech em­ploy­ment hit a sixyear high this spring as in­vestors con­tin­ued to pump money into dozens of lo­cal firms.

The num­ber of in­for­ma­tion and com­mu­ni­ca­tions tech­nol­ogy work­ers in Ot­tawa-Gatineau reached 68,300 in March and April 2014, ac­cord­ing to Statis­tics Canada. That’s just slightly be­low the peak of 72,700 em­ploy­ees recorded near the peak of the dot-com bub­ble in May 2000 and the pre-fi­nan­cial cri­sis level of 70,400 in Oc­to­ber 2007.

The amount of ven­ture cap­i­tal and pri­vate eq­uity flow­ing into Ot­tawa jumped sharply in 2013 due to a $100-mil­lion se­ries-C fund­ing round se­cured by lo­cal e-com­merce plat­form provider Shopify.

But the num­ber of com­pa­nies land­ing in­vest­ments also rose, with fi­nanc­ing deals up more than 50 per cent in 2013, ac­cord­ing to Thom­son Reuters data.
