Ottawa technology ... by the numbers
High-tech employment hit a sixyear high this spring as investors continued to pump money into dozens of local firms.
The number of information and communications technology workers in Ottawa-Gatineau reached 68,300 in March and April 2014, according to Statistics Canada. That’s just slightly below the peak of 72,700 employees recorded near the peak of the dot-com bubble in May 2000 and the pre-financial crisis level of 70,400 in October 2007.
The amount of venture capital and private equity flowing into Ottawa jumped sharply in 2013 due to a $100-million series-C funding round secured by local e-commerce platform provider Shopify.
But the number of companies landing investments also rose, with financing deals up more than 50 per cent in 2013, according to Thomson Reuters data.
