Shameful to not help police officer

Ottawa Citizen - - OPINION -

Re: Fire crew failed to help cop: complaint, Sept. 13.

As a senior citizen, if I had come upon the scene of a police officer being attacked, I would have tried to assist the officer to the best of my abilities. To think that four fit and strong firefighters could not help subdue one person and chose to stand and watch, as is alleged, is flabbergasting.

Human decency and civic responsibility require people to help others in distress or under attack, so how can they justify their inaction? Standard operating procedures and union contracts cannot possibly justify such callous, if not irresponsible, behaviour. Hani Mokhtar, Ottawa
