Francis William Godon
Francis William Godon is a Métis veteran who was born in Dunseith, North Dakota, in 1924. He joined the army in 1942, and landed with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles on D-day, June 6,1944, only to be taken prisoner shorty thereafter.
“There were machine guns shooting at us, and we couldn't get up. First thing I knew, there was my Lieutenant, waving the white flag. What could we do? They said, ‘For you, the war is over.‘ ”
Francis returned home in 1945 and now lives in Boissevain, Man.
