Fran­cis Wil­liam Godon

Fran­cis Wil­liam Godon is a Métis vet­eran who was born in Dun­seith, North Dakota, in 1924. He joined the army in 1942, and landed with the Royal Win­nipeg Ri­fles on D-day, June 6,1944, only to be taken pris­oner shorty there­after.

“There were ma­chine guns shoot­ing at us, and we couldn't get up. First thing I knew, there was my Lieu­tenant, wav­ing the white flag. What could we do? They said, ‘For you, the war is over.‘ ”

Fran­cis re­turned home in 1945 and now lives in Bois­se­vain, Man.
