Sainte Flavie, Que., on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, is home to Le Grand Rassem­ble­ment (The Grand Gath­er­ing), an un­usual col­lec­tion of more than 100 wooden and stone fig­ures. Some are perched in the wa­ter, while oth­ers stand on the beach, of­ten dis­ap­pear­ing and reap­pear­ing with the tides. The life-sized fig­ures—carved by Cana­dian artist Mar­cel Gagnon— cre­ate a haunt­ing pres­ence. Orig­i­nally cre­ated as stud­ies for his paint­ings, they’re now the main at­trac­tion at the Cen­tre d’art Mar­cel Gagnon in Sainte-flavie.
