Police say the plane crashed into a corn field near Mertz Corner Road and Baseline Road at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Police, Tiny Township firefighters and Georgian Bay Ambulance Service paramedics responded.

A private air strip is operated near that location, and police discovered that while the pilot was attempting to land, the plane crashed into a nearby cornfield.

The pilot was first taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for what are described as serious injuries.

He was later airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre according to Const. Susan Jessop.

She did not have an update on his condition, Monday.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada did not attend, Jessop added.
