2nd Century open for business (again)
ORILLIA — After a relocation that lasted a few months, 2nd Century Source for Sports is once again open for business.
Owner Rob Blasdell, his wife Arthemise and daughter Jayden have been looking forward to this for a while.
“It was a quick turn around and many hours of work but the store is looking great and ready to go,” said Blasdell.
Blasdell is no stranger to sports retail as he worked previously for former owner Peter Bromley for 25 years at the previous 2nd Century location across the road on West Street.
When asked about competing in a sports retail world where big box stores have taken over in some cities, Blasdell noted there are many upsides to dealing with a locally owned business.
“Certainly, they will have more inventory, but it’s our focus on customer service that differentiates us from them. We work, live, and play in this community and our reputation is everything. We don’t product push and we’ve never had commissioned sales reps, we provide solutions to what the customer needs are and build relationships from there.”
Blasdell adds that they have many loyal local and regional customers that in some cases travel well over an hour to get their skates sharpened at their location, the same goes for ski tuning and squash racquet servicing.
“I’ve been sharpening skates in Orillia for well over 25 years, it take a real knack to get a pair of skates or skis just right.”
John Hammill, regional advertising director for the Packet & Times and former board member of the Orillia Sports Council had nothing but good things to say about his new Fittons Plaza neighbour.
“I’m glad to see Rob and his team are back open again, 2nd Century Sports here in Orillia has always been a go-to shop for many sports enthusiasts in the city and I know they have always and will continue to sponsor local sports teams in our community.”
Blasdell spends a lot of time playing sports and volunteering in the Orillia area. He is the current general manager of the Orillia Lacrosse Jr. B team and assists with the league where he can.
2nd Century Source for Sports is having their grand re-opening celebration on Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and all day Saturday.
