Fare and fiction at Leacock Museum

Winter is coming — to the Leacock Museum.

Fans of the Game of Thrones television show, and the series of fantasy novels from which it was adapted, will get to experience the goings-on of Westeros and Essos, though in a much more relaxed and safe setting than that of those fictional continents.

Feast of Thrones will take place Saturday at the museum.

“We hope people have an authentic experience that feels like the show for them, and the books,” said Alex Andrews, program assistant at the museum.

Attendees will enjoy live music, a sword-fight demonstration, arm-wrestling competitions and more.

And, as the name of the event implies, there will be food.

The menu for the three-course dinner will be inspired by the fictional regions in Game of Thrones.

“We’ve been trying to stay true to the book,” Andrews said of the evening’s events.

Feast of Thrones is the inaugural event in the museum’s Eating Their Words series, an idea that came to Jenny Martynyshyn following last year’s Ode to Harry Potter, held during Children’s Day as part of the Leacock Summer Festival.

“We thought, ‘Why can’t we do it for the grown-ups, too?’” said Martynyshyn, the museum’s administrative co-ordinator.

She plans to revisit the Harry Potter theme — but geared to adults — next year for the museum’s sophomore effort in the Eating Their Words series. Martynyshyn has some other ideas for future themes, including Outlander and James Bond, but those are not yet confirmed.

The series, she said, “gives people the opportunity to leave reality for a while and live their favourite books.”

Saturday’s event, which will start at 6 p.m., is recommended for those 18 and older.

Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory, though there will be prizes for the best costumes.

Tickets cost $45, which includes the meal and a souvenir photo with dragons on a green screen provided by the Orillia Public Library.

Merchandise from Dr. Comics and Manticore Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Prizes are being donated by a number of local businesses.

Tickets are available until Wednesday at 3 p.m. through the Orillia Opera House box office by calling 705-326-8011 or visiting orilliaoperahouse.ca. They can also be purchased until end of day Thursday by calling the Leacock Museum at 705-329-1908 or visiting Manticore Books on Mississaga Street East.

The Leacock Museum will host its Feast of Thrones event Saturday. Pictured with two of the Game of Thrones-inspired banners that will be up during the event are Jenny Martynyshyn, administrative co-ordinator, and Tom Rose, community liaison assistant.
