IN­VEST­ING IN THE NEXT GEN­ER­A­TION OF OLYMPIANS AND PARALYMPIANS

The fed­eral Min­is­ter of Sport and Per­sons with Dis­abil­i­ties, Carla Qual­trough, an­nounced up to

$10 mil­lion in an­nual fund­ing to sup­port ath­letes who have demon­strated medal po­ten­tial for fu­ture Olympic or Par­a­lympic Games.

“As a Par­a­lympian, I know first­hand the im­pact that our ath­letes’ ac­com­plish­ments have in in­spir­ing all Cana­di­ans, es­pe­cially our young peo­ple,” said Qual­trough who is vis­ually im­paired and for­merly com­peted as a swim­mer.

The in­vest­ment – $5 mil­lion from

the fed­eral gov­ern­ment, $4 mil­lion from the Cana­dian Olympic Com­mit­tee and $1 mil­lion from the Cana­dian Par­a­lympic Com­mit­tee – is de­signed to com­ple­ment the cur­rent in­vest­ments in the sport sys­tem. It will sup­port ad­di­tional coaches, im­prove the daily train­ing en­vi­ron­ments of ath­letes, and in­vest in sport science and sport medicine ser­vices. As a re­sult, ath­letes will be bet­ter pre­pared (phys­i­cally, men­tally, tech­ni­cally and tac­ti­cally) when they reach the level of top in­ter­na­tional com­pe­ti­tion.
