UBCO set to wel­come alumni, staff back home

Home­com­ing cel­e­bra­tions next week­end will in­clude street fes­ti­val, food, soc­cer game

UBC Okana­gan is host­ing a home­com­ing event for alumni, stu­dents, fac­ulty, staff and the com­mu­nity next week­end.

The week­end will in­clude a street fes­ti­val, food, a soc­cer game be­tween the UBC Thun­der­birds and UBC Okana­gan Heat, a scavenger hunt and more.

On Fri­day, Oct. 19, there will be a kick­off break­fast from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The break­fast is free for stu­dents, and $3 for fac­ulty and staff.

The earth, en­vi­ron­men­tal and ge­o­graphic sci­ences de­part­ment is host­ing a free bar­be­cue from 4 to 6 p.m. Fri­day.

At 6 p.m. Fri­day, there will be a street fes­ti­val with mu­sic by lo­cal coun­try star Ben Klick, car­ni­val games, food trucks and a beer gar­den.

On Fri­day, there are also a va­ri­ety of events for alumni of vis­ual arts, man­age­ment, nurs­ing and so­cial work.

An en­gi­neer­ing ex­trav­a­ganza event will take place Satur­day from 11 a.m. to noon, while a chem­istry dis­cov­ery event will take place that day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The free men’s soc­cer match will be at 1 p.m. Satur­day.

A scavenger hunt will take place at 3 p.m. af­ter­noon. The cost is $20 per team of four peo­ple.

On Satur­day evening, a har­vest re­cep­tion will fea­ture more than 20 tast­ing sta­tions from Okana­gan restau­ra­teurs, wine­mak­ers, craft brewers and cider pro­duc­ers.

The event, Nour­ish, will be­gin with a talk by Cana­dian Olympic skele­ton cham­pion Jon Mont­gomery.

Mont­gomery, who is the host of the Amaz­ing Race Canada, will share the story of his Olympic jour­ney and dis­cuss lessons he learned about team­work, lead­er­ship and dream­ing big.
