Prairie Fire

Poetry Calling

(For Patrick O’Connell)

- ARTHUR ADAMSON

my friend Patrick has space enough

an apartment with two modest rooms

an inner song a telephone

connected to friends and the voices of night

words are like a flower’s breath

a solace won from ghosts of time

his growing peace is that release

of the voice uncoiling

from the silent contemplation

of so many intimate disasters

the way he splits the dark
