Pipe bomb in­ci­dent in re­sults in some charges for a Swift Cur­rent youth, 17

An in­ci­dent in­volv­ing what looked to be a pipe bomb has re­sulted in charges to a 17 year-old Swift Cur­rent youth. At ap­prox­i­mately 1 a.m. June 14, mem­bers from the Swift Cur­rent Mu­nic­i­pal RCMP De­tach­ment re­ceived a com­plaint of an item re­sem­bling a pipe bomb in the 400 block of Her­bert Street East in Swift Cur­rent. Mem­bers im­me­di­ately se­cured the scene and lo­cated three sus­pi­cious items in the mid­dle of a park­ing lot, well away from any struc­tures.

The Saskatchewan RCMP Ex­plo­sive Dis­posal Unit at­tended to as­sist and as a pre­cau­tion, de­stroyed the items at the scene. They are cur­rently be­ing ex­am­ined. Ad­di­tion­ally, Saskatchewan RCMP Po­lice Dog Ser­vices at­tended and con­ducted a search. No ad­di­tional sus­pi­cious items were lo­cated in the area.

The in­ves­ti­ga­tion into this in­ci­dent has re­sulted in a 17 year old youth from Swift Cur­rent be­ing charged with Pos­ses­sion of an ex­plo­sive with­out law­ful ex­cuse - Sec­tion 82 of the Crim­i­nal Code and Pos­ses­sion of a weapon dan­ger­ous to the pub­lic -Sec­tion 88 of the Crim­i­nal Code.

The ac­cused can­not be iden­ti­fied un­der the pro­vi­sions of the Youth Crim­i­nal Jus­tice Act. The youth was held in cus­tody and was to ap­pear in Pro­vin­cial Court July 20 in Swift Cur­rent.
