Looking for something different
Local artist opens “Odd one out” exhibit at Grace Campbell Gallery
Davis Phaneuf has always looked for a unique angle to her art.
The local artist’s work ranges from abstract images to paintings of how Prince Albert landmarks would look if they were taken over by kids. It’s all part of her desire to show another perspective.
“I just wanted to show something different around P.A.,” she says. “I take part in the Winter Festival art show a lot and it’s a lot of the same folk art, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but I wanted to show that there can be other stuff than just landscapes and animal paintings.”
On Saturday, Phaneuf officially opened a selection of her work at the Grace Campbell Gallery, appropriately titled “Odd One Out.” It includes a collection of her favourite works from the last four or five years, almost all of which are acrylic paintings.
“I don’t have patience for oil paint,” she chuckles.
“I don’t even really have patience for acrylic. Sometimes I have my hairdryer out because I like putting on paint and doing it fast, so I work with lots of acrylic.”
Phaneuf’s road to becoming an artist didn’t start until after high school, when a cousin gave her some canvases and paintbrushes for Christmas and told her to “do something.” She hasn’t stopped since.
She’d already developed a love of paintings and drawings through anime and graphic novels, so it just became a matter of putting it on the canvas.
“I did graffiti work a lot when I was younger, but then when I got older I started putting it on canvas and not buildings anymore,” she chuckles. “It was smarter.”
Phaneuf’s works contain plenty of local imagery. From the National Hotel to local streets and parks, growing up in Prince Albert has left a large imprint on her. She brings that imprint to the canvas with a wide array of colour, and remains hopeful that gallery goers will enjoy the perspective.
“Odd one out” runs from Sept. 29 until Oct. 31 at the Grace Campbell Gallery.
