Police find weapons over long weekend
Police officers spent their holiday weekend nabbing bike-riding suspects armed with dangerous weapons.
The first incident took place on Saturday, when officers arrested a man reported to be riding a stolen bicycle.
A witness called officers over to the 100 block of 11 Street East, where they arrived shortly after midnight. They spotted the man on the stolen bike, according to a police press release, and saw him enter a residence.
The officers knocked on the door. The man fled on foot through a different door. But the officers pursued him, caught him and placed him under arrest. Inside his backpack, they found a sawed off .22 calibre rifle, a bb gun and ammunition.
On Monday night, police spotted another man riding a bike while patrolling around the 700 block of 13 Street West. This suspect was wanted on outstanding warrants. Police made an arrest and found a machete concealed in the man’s jacket.
This man, aged 19, was also carrying a backpack. A search inside revealed three hunting rifle scopes, a rifle magazine, and rifle ammunition.
Both men were due in Prince Albert’s provincial courthouse on Tuesday.
