Where the Angels Wait
This magazine was conceived on a sunny balcony on Bowen Island last July, and we confess a beer or two may have been involved. It’s been a fast, wild ride since then!
The publishing world is in the throes of a great transformation, the like of which has not been seen since Gutenberg made advancements with movable type. Knowing the type of magazine we wanted to read, but not knowing if there was a market for it, we decided to test the waters by crowdsourcing to see if the appetite there.
When Kickstarter opened up shop in Canada in time for us to launch our campaign it seemed like a propitious alignment of the stars. There have been even more good omens since then. Alice Munro, Queen of the Short Story won the Nobel award for Literature and, on the same day our campaign reached its funding goal, Lynn Coady won the Giller Prize with her short story collection, Hellgoing. It looks like a very good time indeed to be writing and publishing short fiction.
Omens aside, we have been blessed with good fortune and good friends. CC Humphreys, JJ Lee, Susanna Kearsley and Jack White were all gracious and quick to offer us short fiction when we asked them to lend us their star power to get the project
