75TH Anniversary of ORP Blyskawica
On 25 November 1937 in Cowes (United Kingdom) white-and-red flag was first raised on Polish destroyer called ORP “Blyskawica”. She was one of the most famous ships in the Polish Navy history. The day of 25th of November 2012 was the 75th anniversary of that historic event.
Celebrations commenced on Saturday, November 24 with a morning history session dedicated to commemorate the achievements of the crew, the history of the ship and her exemplary service during World War II.
The main celebrations of the anniversary, in accordance to naval tradition, begun on Sunday at 8:00 AM with raising the colors and flags throughout the ship. At noon the main events followed with the ship being decorated with the medal “Pro Memoria” and unveiling a plaque commemorating the 75th anniversary of the ship s service. The ceremony was accompanied by the honorary guard and the Polish Navy Representative Orchestra with participation of Polish Navy Commander-in-Chief Vice Admiral (three Star) Tomasz Mathea, the representatives of Cowes and Gdynia city, the former crews of the ship and the Friends of Blyskawica Society.
