3’ 50 bat­tery shown cov­ered in ice on board Franklin D. Roo­sevelt’s (CVA 42) dur­ing Op­er­a­tion Snow­ball, which was a 13-day ex­per­i­ment in cold weather where cloth­ing and gear were tested in sub-freez­ing tem­per­a­tures off New­found­land. The prob­lems fac­ing the car­rier was that as soon as the wa­ter went over the deck, the wa­ter would even­tu­ally freeze over. Pho­to­graph re­lease April 11, 1957.
