Dur­ing the Sec­ond World War re­fit cri­sis, whereby Canada had or­dered con­struc­tion of a plethora of ships for the Battle of the At­lantic, thought to re­fit and re­pair was not thought of at first. The re­quired work on ac­tive ships soon grew to be too much for ex­ist­ing ship­yards so an emer­gency pro­gram was un­der­taken to pro­vide marine rail­ways in places such as Shel­burne, Syd­ney and Dart­mouth. Pic­tured he is HMCS Jon­quiere un­der re­fit in what is be­lieved to be ei­ther Shel­burne or Dart­mouth.
