Naval Kit Roundup

It is a good time to be a modeler of Naval subjects with many new kits being issued in all the major scales. Here are a few of note:

Hasegawa’s Little Sub Seeker

Hasegawa of Japan has recently issued a 1/200 scale kit of the P-8A Poseidon. The P-8A is the US Navy’s replacement for the P-3 Orion and is based on the 737 airliner. Hasegawa’s kit is similarly based on their 737 kits with new parts for the maritime patrol modification. The only problem? 1/200 scale. Now can someone do a P-8A in 1/144?

Sword Models Goes Navy

Sword Models of the Czech Republic has become the best friend of 1/72 modelers of U.S. Naval subjects. Recent kits have included the T-28B and T-28C Trojans, two boxings of the F3D Skyknight, a T2V Seastar, and both the standard fighter and photo-reconnaissance versions of the early McDonnell F2H Banshees. A F8F-9P Cougar and Fairey Gannet AEW. 3 are next on the list. Sword kits are limited run injected plastic, but with some work and care will make up into nice models. The T28s come with a nice resin engine and the Banshees include both resin and photo-etch parts. All kits come with multiple decal options.

Kitty Hawk 1/48 Marine Helos

Kitty Hawk of China are keeping up to the minute by releasing two kits of the US Marine Corps latest tactical helicopters. 1/48 kits of the AH-1Z Viper and the UH-1Y Venom have recently hit hobby shops and early indications are that they are very nice. In addition, Kitty Hawk has also issued a new Grumman F9F-8/8P Cougar kit in 1/48 to join their Cougar family.

Kinetic 1/48 Sea Harrier FA.2

Kinetic of China has recently released a Sea Harrier FA.2 in 1/48 scale with a rumored Falklands era Sea Harrier FRS.1 to follow.

Special Hobby Guardians

Special Hobby of the Czech Republic has just put the hunter/ killer team of the 1/48 Grumman AF-2S Guardian and 1/48 Grumman AF-2W Guardian on the market. This is the first time these two subjects have been released in 1/48 in injected molded plastic. It appears that these are solely plastic kits with no resin or photo-etch editions. US Navy decal options are included, but all are in overall Gloss Sea Blue.
