T’S A GONDOLA PARADE The masquerade parade on the Grand Canal (below) is one of many colorful events during the Carnivale. FESTE DELLE MARIE Two “Maries” (right) in traditional Venetian period costume participate in the parade of “Twelve Beautiful Venetian Girls,” an event that forms part of the Festa delle Marie in St. Mark’s Square. It evokes a centuries-old event, in which the elected lord and chief of state of Venice gave jewels for a bridal dowry to 12 beautiful but humble girls. CLAUDIA MARCHIORI (far right) performed as the Angel of the Carnivale at the 2017 Carnivale, tossing gifts to spectators below. The “Flight of the Angel” event dates to the 1500s, when an unknown person walked a tightrope in St. Mark’s Square.
