T’S A GONDOLA PA­RADE The mas­quer­ade pa­rade on the Grand Canal (be­low) is one of many col­or­ful events dur­ing the Car­ni­vale. FESTE DELLE MARIE Two “Maries” (right) in tra­di­tional Venetian pe­riod cos­tume par­tic­i­pate in the pa­rade of “Twelve Beau­ti­ful Venetian Girls,” an event that forms part of the Festa delle Marie in St. Mark’s Square. It evokes a cen­turies-old event, in which the elected lord and chief of state of Venice gave jew­els for a bridal dowry to 12 beau­ti­ful but hum­ble girls.
