A TALE OF FOUR CITIES
LONDON, PARIS, NEW YORK, MILAN—TRAVELLING THE WORLD’S FASHION CAPITALS REVEALS TAILORED TAKES ON THE SEASON’S TOP TRENDS. BY: FRANK DE JESÚS
Frank de Jesús breaks down the top trends from Milan, Paris, London and New York.
When Shakespeare wrote “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances,” he could have been referring to the fashion world itself, with its myriad designers and creative forces who surface twice a year to show the world what they’ve been concocting in their studios and ateliers. The fashion cycle is also one with many exits and entrances for its creative men and women, as fresh blood is frequently injected into established fashion houses with the coming and going of new talent.
Every season, as trends overlap from one fashion capital to the next, each city and its designers offer their own take on the subject. For example, velvet is a favoured canvas for Fall 2016, however, how it is presented differs from one group of designers to the next and seems to rely heavily on their locale. As you’d expect, designers in New York will handle that plush stuff with a certain athletic aplomb while designers in Milan have their own opulent approach.
It is indeed a truly global society we reside in now, compared to the world of Shakespeare. Yet each city, country and tribe does play a part in the creative zeitgeist, informing and influencing the trends and looks we adopt for the season. Here’s a look at the major fashion capitals of the world and the news they’re creating this fall.
