Since its humble beginnings in 2000 BC Egypt, velvet has become synonymous with luxury and glamour. The silken woven textile has been used in fashion for centuries, and doesn’t seem to be vanishing anytime soon. Case in point: Velvet is the fabric du jour on the Fall 2016 runways, setting a soulful and sumptuous mood for the season.
Valentino’s take on the trend was a softly falling mustard dress, with a high neckline and dainty pleats. Meanwhile, over at Givenchy, a little black velvet frock with plush fur three-quarter sleeves amped up the runway. At Bottega Veneta, the material received an upgrade in the form of a deep blue double-breasted blazer and matching trousers. Despite the varying takes, one thing is certain: Whatever your preferred mood or style, there’s no quicker way into the spotlight this season than as a vision in velvet.
