TIFF re­turns for its 41st year on Septem­ber 8th, and as usual it brings with it a wide range of world pre­mieres fea­tur­ing some of the top stars from around the world. Here are our favourites.

The Mag­nif­i­cent Seven

This re­make of the 1960 West­ern (which in it­self was a re­make of a 1954 Ja­panese film called Seven Sa­mu­rai) has a very strong cast, and is the open­ing night film for the fes­ti­val. Chris Pratt, Den­zel Wash­ing­ton, Ethan Hawke and Vin­cent D’Onofrio star as out­laws who come to­gether to help a vil­lage against sav­age thieves.

Ar­rival

With Cana­dian di­rec­tor De­nis Vil­leneuve be­com­ing a more main­stream name af­ter the suc­cess of Pris­on­ers and Si­cario, his lat­est film is sure to turn heads as well. In this one an elite team is brought to­gether af­ter mys­te­ri­ous space­craft touch down around the world. Amy Adams, Jeremy Ren­ner and For­est Whi­taker star in this film that ex­plores what hap­pens to the world’s econ­omy and sta­bil­ity if aliens where to sud­denly ar­rive on our planet.

Amer­i­can Pas­toral

Ewan McGre­gor makes his di­rec­to­rial de­but in this film based on the Pulitzer Prize-win­ning novel by Philip Roth. It fol­lows the story of a suc­cess­ful busi­ness­man played by McGre­gor whose ideal life is turned up­side down af­ter his daugh­ter is ac­cused of com­mit­ting a vi­o­lent crime in 1960s Amer­ica. Jen­nifer Con­nelly and Dakota Fan­ning cos­tar.

The edge of seven­teen

The fes­ti­val will close this year with this com­ing of age com­edy-drama star­ring Hailee Ste­in­feld, Woody Har­rel­son and Kyra Sedg­wick. The film is about an awk­ward teenager whose life be­comes even more com­pli­cated when her older brother starts dat­ing her best friend. Only the un­ex­pected friend­ship she makes with a new boy helps to give her a glim­mer of hope that things might just turn out all right af­ter all.
