Robert Mapplethorpe was only 42 when he passed away in 1989 due to complications from HIV/ AIDS, but in his short life he managed to cause quite a stir with his seductive yet disturbing photographs. His exquisite, highly stylized black- and- white portraits will get their due in this major Canadian premiere. Richard Gere, Andy Warhol, Patti Smith and Yoko Ono are among the celebrities he shot, and they appear here alongside his other works, including nudes and still lifes. Mapplethorpe’s work is said to be reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci, African divinities and idealized athletes, and isn’t to be missed.
