Canadian songstress Kiesza shares her favourite beauty tips and secrets.

While Kiesza may be best known for the powerful melodies on her 2014 hit single “Hideaway,” the 28-year-old singer-songwriter also harbours a not-so-secret passion for beauty. In fact, Kiesza (who was born Kiesa Rae Ellestad in Calgary) recently launched a makeup collaboration with MAC. As it turns out, 2017 appears to be the year of Kiesza, who unveiled her single “Dearly Beloved” in January and has a sophomore album on the way. With her voluminous auburn curls and flawless porcelain complexion, the star is also a Canadian beauty in her own right. Real Style caught up with the vibrant and energetic Kiesza about her new makeup line, signature beauty look and top skincare secrets.

Tell us about your Kiesza x MAC collection.

Kiesza: I created what I feel like is a complete look. I think eyebrows, eyes and lips are the full look. I designed the new lip colour with MAC, and then the eyebrow and liner are products that I use and feel are wonderful. “Dearly Beloved” is the matte lipstick, and it’s a lighter shade. The backstory is I got really obsessed with brown tones, and it was sort of aligned with MAC approaching me for a collaboration. When they asked what kinds of colours I was excited about, I mentioned that I would love to explore the brown shades. I really wanted to create a brown lipstick that has sort of a rose base to it. A lot of the browns that I had or was finding had a more yellow base—when they wore off, they wore off with a yellow tone. For me, I want something that’s really practical. Also, I really wanted to include everyone, and make a shade that would work on as many skin tones as possible.

You sure hav e a busy schedule! Do you hav e any tricks for al-day , longlasting makeup?

Kiesza: I always find the first place for [lipstick] to come off is inside the lip, because you’re touching your tongue. I always dab it dry before I put the lipstick on, and then I might even fan it a little and let it dry. Then I reapply on top of that, and I find it stays on. Take that extra time when you’re applying it; maybe one extra layer.

You’re known for your gorgeous red hair and fair complexion. Do you hav e a signat ure beauty look?

Kiesza: I always like a dark, thick mascara. MAC In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash is the one that I use. It’s really great because you can layer it. My MAC liner is the only liner that stays on for me. Brows are a day to day thing. Sometimes I’ll make my brows darker, and sometimes I’ll make my brows lighter or shape them differently. I have a lot of different brow products. With lips, I’m either going completely bold and I’m exploring vibrant shades of neons, or I have my go-tos.

Who is a beauty icon for you?

Kiesza: Audrey Hepburn. I love elegance with makeup, so I’ve always been inspired by her. That’s where I got the winged eye inspiration.

What are your best kept skincare secrets?

Kiesza: Taking enough time to prep your skin is really important. Exfoliating—not overdoing it, but making sure you exfoliate your skin and put a nice moisturizer on. [Especially] if you’re going to put on foundation. It just makes all the difference! If you don’t and the weather is dry, I find it just flakes off and can look chalky. Your skin is your canvas, so it’s really important for it to stay healthy, and to take care of your skin.
