VMAs categories gender neutral

With its announcement of the nominees for the 2017 Video Music Awards, MTV has scrapped gender-specific categories, such as best female video and best male video. Instead, it combined them into the artist of the year award. MTV has also added the best fight against the system category. Qualifying videos are those that focus on social injustices. Nominees include Logic, Big Sean, Alessia Cara and John Legend. MTV made the news public Tuesday via Instagram Live. Kendrick Lamar led the nominees with eight nominations for Humble, the first single from his new album. He’ll vie for artist of the year with Katy Perry and The Weeknd, who tied for the second-most nominations with five each. The VMAs will air live on Sunday, Aug. 27.
