In the aftermath of tragedy how can we help?
Tales of heroism and memories of those who were lost continue to be shared across Toronto after the devastating attack on Yonge Street between Finch and Sheppard Avenues on April 23. Flowers, pictures and candles have accumulated at a memorial at Mel Lastman Square to honour the 10 who were lost and 16 injured. The city’s resilience have been praised, with sentiments such as “Love for All, Hatred for None” written across the memorial, and “Toronto the Good” and “Toronto Strong” appearing in headlines worldwide. More than $1 million has been raised for the families of the victims through various campaigns as well as the city’s #TorontoStrong Fund (text TORONTO to 80100 to donate). Another way to help is to donate blood to Canadian Blood Services (blood.ca/en). Alek Minassian, the 25-year-old Richmond Hill man allegedly behind the attack, has been charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder.
