MAGGIE de VRIES

Morgan’s Story: Excerpts

-

Maggie de Vries is the author of ten books for young readers. She won the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize for Hunger Journeys and for Rabbit Ears, her most recent novel, which tells the story of a vulnerable young woman living on the streets in Vancouver. This is also the subject of her 2003 memoir, Missing Sarah, about her sister who disappeared from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. “After she disappeared, I changed; I learned so much, and gradually realized that my thinking had been part of the problem, that we as a society tend to see sets of stereotypes instead of human beings when we look at people like my sister (sex workers, drug users),” said de Vries. In this issue of Room she shares excerpts from her novel-in-progress, Morgan’s Story.
