Full of Grace
With a new COACH COLLABORATION under her belt, SELENA GOMEZ opens up on creativity, control, and her everyday essentials.
In the game of life, Selena Gomez is on top.
This summer saw her two new tracks— “Fetish” and “Bad Liar”—climb the charts, and with 125 million (and counting) followers on Instagram, the 25-year-old singer and actress from Texas is the most watched woman on the planet.
Now, Gomez is adding designer to her long list of achievements with her own Coach bag, the Selena Grace. “A bag that goes with everything is so important to me— I need to be able to have a bag for months and not change it out,” says Gomez. “I am always on the move so I literally have everything in there.”
An everyday take on effortless luxury, the Selena Grace is a double-handed carryall fit for the needs of modern life, including plenty of room for a cell phone, Gomez’s number-one essential. “Phones are more than just phones these days,” she says.
To craft her new dream bag, Gomez worked closely with Coach creative director Stuart Vevers, an ongoing partnership that Gomez describes as being very special. “We really bonded from the beginning—we spoke for weeks and weeks before we decided to do something together,” Gomez says. “It’s really great to have an influence and some control when you’re working with a brand. Having control in a situation is something that’s important to me, as a woman and as a businessperson.”
And it’s clear that the admiration is mutual. “Selena is charming. She’s got a warmth that’s special. There is a realness to her. To me, she speaks to a generation,” says Vevers. “She’s authentic, honest—that’s probably why she’s so popular on social. She connects.”
That personal connection is a key component of the Selena Grace. Gomez paid close attention to the details of her bag, adding a hangtag bearing her signature and a story patch sewn inside with her empowering message: “To be you is to be strong.” The base of the bag is embossed with “Love yourself first”—a phrase inspired by one of her tattoos—in Selena’s handwriting. “I am so lucky to get to be creative in my life, and work on a variety of projects. But it is very important to make time for yourself, listen to yourself, and be kind to yourself.”
