Here’s a look at what was mak­ing head­lines in the Tri­bune-post 25 years ago this week.

CMA hon­ours for­mer Sackville sur­geon – For­mer Sackville sur­geon Dr. Gor­don Fer­gu­son was one of two New Bruns­wick physi­cians hon­oured by the Cana­dian Med­i­cal As­so­ci­a­tion in 1993.

Fer­gu­son, who was at the time serv­ing as chief ex­ec­u­tive of­fice of the New Bruns­wick Ex­tra-mu­ral Hos­pi­tal and Dr. Vic­tor Mclaugh­lin of Monc­ton were elected to se­nior mem­ber­ship in their na­tional pro­fes­sional body. CMA se­nior mem­bers are selected on the ba­sis of dis­tin­guished med­i­cal ca­reers and on con­tri­bu­tions to both the pro­fes­sion and the com­mu­nity. A na­tive of Ire­land, Fer­gu­son came to New Bruns­wick in 1953 fol­low­ing post-grad­u­ate med­i­cal stud­ies in Eng­land and Swe­den. He prac­ticed surgery in Sackville un­til 1971 when he as­sumed the re­spon­si­bil­i­ties of med­i­cal direc­tor of Medi­care New Bruns­wick.
