EOS Eco-energy brings back popular draft-proofing parties
Fall means it’s time to seal air leaks in your home
EOS Eco-energy is once again offering free draft-proofing work parties all fall and winter.
With funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Eco Action Fund, EOS is looking for homeowners interested in learning how to seal air leaks in their home.
“Draft-proofing work parties involve a homeowner inviting friends over and EOS brings all the air sealing materials, tools, even party food, and it’s totally free,” explains EOS executive director Amanda Marlin. EOS can also bring volunteers if needed. EOS covers the cost of a certified home energy advisor who brings a blower door unit that measures changes in air flow in the home. EOS staff and the energy advisor teach the homeowner and their party guests where to look for drafts and how to seal them. Then, everyone gets down to work sealing air leaks during the threehour party.
EOS has organized 17 draftproofing parties over the past two years. On average during a party, drafts are reduced by roughly 15 per cent but sometimes as high as 40 per cent. This translates into saving money on heating bills and also reducing emissions. Homes are warmer and more comfortable too. Homeowners and party guests have also learned new home improvement skills.
“Homeowners and party guests are always surprised to learn where drafts are coming from and really appreciate learning how to do the work themselves,” Marlin adds.
Draft- proofing work parties have been compared to old-fashioned barn raisings where neigh- bours come together to help each other. The free EOS draft-proofing work party program is open to all homeowners in the Tantramar region with priority for lowerincome residents, those in need, or those with non-electric heat sources. EOS is also looking for volunteers and for businesses interested in sponsoring additional parties to help meet the demand.
