Con­cert pi­anist Andrew Son per­forms at Brun­ton

A ris­ing young con­cert artist will be per­form­ing in Sackville.

The pub­lic is in­vited to Brun­ton Au­di­to­rium at Mount Al­li­son Univer­sity to en­joy pi­anist Andrew Son on Sun­day, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m.

In April, Son was cho­sen from five ac­com­plished com­peti­tors at the At­lantic Young Artist Com­pe­ti­tion. As the 2018 com­pe­ti­tion win­ner, he will em­bark on a con­cert tour of the re­gion, with recitals in Char­lot­te­town, Sackville, Yar­mouth, Wolfville, Hal­i­fax, and Ma­hone Bay. The Sackville con­cert is pre­sented with the sup­port of the Mount Al­li­son Univer­sity depart­ment of mu­sic.

Son will present a var­ied pro­gram, in­clud­ing Haydn’s Sonata in C Ma­jor, Hob. XVI: 48, Men­delssohn’s Vari­a­tions sérieuses, Liszt’s Para­phrase on Verdi’s Rigo­letto, and Chopin’s Sonata No. 3 in B mi­nor, Op. 58.

A re­cip­i­ent of the Foun­tain School of Per­form­ing Arts Un­der­grad­u­ate Schol­ar­ship and an IB Re­new­able Schol­ar­ship, Son is cur­rently in his sec­ond year at Dal­housie Univer­sity, ma­jor­ing in neu­ro­science with a mi­nor in mu­sic. He stud­ies pi­ano with Lynn Stodola and Peter Allen.

No stranger to the na­tional stage, Son rep­re­sented Nova Sco­tia at the 2015 Cana­dian Fed­er­a­tion of Mu­sic Teach­ers’ As­so­ci­a­tions (CFMTA) Na­tional Pi­ano Com­pe­ti­tion in Van­cou­ver. As win­ner of the ad­vanced class of the 2018 NS Reg­is­tered Mu­sic Teach­ers’ As­so­ci­a­tion Schol­ar­ship Com­pe­ti­tion, he will once again rep­re­sent his home prov­ince at the 2019 CFMTA pi­ano com­pe­ti­tion, this time in Win­nipeg. This past Au­gust, Son was the first-place win­ner in the pi­ano divi­sion at the 2018 Na­tional Mu­sic Fes­ti­val in Sackville and was named Sec­ond Place Grand Award win­ner at the fi­nal gala con­cert.
