Sa­lon read­ing planned for We Happy Few

The play We Happy Few by Mark Bla­grave will be the fo­cus of an up­com­ing gath­er­ing.

A sa­lon read­ing will be held Mon­day, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Marsh­lands Inn. Ad­mis­sion is by do­na­tion.

The play, which had its world pre­miere at Live Bait Theatre in 2003, re­ceived crit­i­cal and au­di­ence ac­claim.

In We Happy Few, two Cana­dian sol­diers in a con­va­les­cent hos­pi­tal par­tic­i­pate in a pro­duc- tion of Shake­speare’s Henry V on the con­di­tion they can mount a counter-play to show the jin­go­is­tic ac­tor-man­ager what it was re­ally like in the Bat­tle of the Somme.

The name Mark Bla­grave is a fa­mil­iar one to Sackville res­i­dents. He’s been a theatre di­rec­tor, univer­sity pro­fes­sor and ad­min­is­tra­tor in New Brunswick and On­tario as well as a play­wright, nov­el­ist and writer of short fic­tion.

This read­ing marks the sec­ond in a se­ries of read­ings of plays first pro­duced by Live Bait to cel­e­brate the 30th year of the com­pany, founded in 1988. This pre­sen­ta­tion fea­tures orig­i­nal cast mem­bers, and for­mer Live Bait artis­tic di­rec­tor Char­lie Rhin­dress as di­rec­tor. The play is also be­ing pre­sented as a com­mem­o­ra­tion of 100 years since the end of the First World War.
