With only ‘small’ amount of diesel spilled, crews hope to reopen area by early Friday
Crews work to off-load ammonia gas from a semi that rolled on its side on College Drive between Circle Drive and Central Avenue on Thursday. No injuries were reported and fire Chief Morgan Hackl said the tanker containing hydrous ammonia was ‘not ruptured’.
The Saskatoon fire department hopes to complete its cleanup by Friday morning, after a semi transporting ammonia gas tipped and diesel was spilled.
Firefighters, including the hazardous materials unit, and police responded Thursday around 8:30 a.m. to the rollover in the eastbound lane of College Drive at Circle Drive. No injuries were reported as a result of the accident, police and fire officials said in news releases, but drivers in the area faced significant delays.
All traffic was shut down on College Drive between Circle Drive and Central Avenue. Eastbound traffic on College Drive was diverted south on Preston Avenue, while westbound traffic was diverted north on Central Avenue.
Fire Chief Morgan Hackl said the tanker containing hydrous ammonia was “not ruptured” and that a “very small” amount of diesel fuel was the only product leaking.
The cleanup is a multi-step process, Hackl said.
With fire crews working alongside Transport Canada, the ammonia gas in the fallen tanker was to be offloaded onto another tanker. After that, crews were to work with Transport Canada to determine when it would be safe to move the semi and tanker upright. At that point, with approval from Transport Canada, the tanker would be removed from the area.
The fire department initially stated that the road closure could be in place for up to two days, but by Thursday evening Hackl said crews were hopeful to have cleanup complete and traffic restrictions removed in time for the Friday morning commute.
Fire department staff remained on the scene throughout Thursday to for safety reasons while police were also present to help with traffic.
Hackl said police are investigating the cause of the incident.
