Neither a low-flying airplane during her routine nor choppy ice following two hockey games deterred Barbara Ann Scott, right, from becoming the first Canadian to win a figure-skating gold. She remains the only Canadian singles figure skater to win gold.

The men’s hockey team also won gold, and pairs figure skaters Suzanne Morrow and Wallace Diestelmeyer claimed bronze.
